Have a Green Wedding

You won't be able to stop global warming on your wedding day, but your choices can lessen the carbon footprint of your event. For example, if your guests are traveling long distances, offset the carbon emissions from their trips with a donation to

OmniFocus in SF, WWDC

The Omni Mouth » OmniFocus demo at the San Francisco Apple Store

My peeps at OmniGroup mentioned this, so I’ll slide it in as well. I’ll be appearing with my OmniBrethren at the Stockton Street Apple store on Thursday June 21st to demo OmniFocus. Huzzah:

[Merlin will] be talking about productivity tips in general and discussing how OmniFocus fits in his workflow, so it should be more fun and interesting than your basic software demo. You should definitely come by and say howdy.

Be there.

Second, I heartily second Linda’s suggestion that you email (omnifocus-wwdc at omnigroup dot com) if you’re interested in doing an informal OF meet-up at WWDC.

If you don’t come, Ken and I will have to sit there and stare at each other and maybe talk about D&D. Please, don’t make us talk about D&D.

43F Podcast: Snell & Gruber on iPhone applications

Jason Snell and John Gruber on iPhone applications

Merlin talks with MacWorld Magazine’s Jason Snell and DaringFireball.net’s John Gruber about the likely future of applications for the recently announced iPhone. Who will be allowed to play? How does it affect the ostensible competition? Will this end up feeling more like a phone with an iPod, a Mac with a phone, or something altogether different? (5:48)

TagWorld Rumors: Viacom Investment and Partnership

TagWorld, the social networking site that launched in late 2005, has been the subject of a lot of speculation lately. Valleywag speculated that the company was in trouble and pointed out that the management page (cache here) had been removed. Others have noted that TagWorld’s Comscore numbers have dropped significantly from earlier in 2006. At the very least, the company has made little headway against MySpace and the others.

But there are other rumors as well. Viacom and NBC are still figuring out their social networking strategies (NBC is doing so publicly), and insiders are saying that Viacom will likely announce an investment and/or partnership deal with TagWorld in the near future. It’s likely that TagWorld’s engine will be the back end to the much anticipated MTV social network. TagWorld won’t comment on the story, other than to say that they remain healthy and will be launching a new version soon.

TagWorld previously raised $7.5 million from Draper Fisher Jurvetson, in March 2006.

HYPERLINK "http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/Techcrunch/~3/70529915/"AOL Founder’s Next Startup: Revolution Health

http://www.revolutionhealth.comAOL Co-founder Steve Case, who left Time Warner (AOL’s parent company) in 2005, has effectively launched his next startup - HYPERLINK "http://www.revolutionhealth.com"Revolution Health. The domain name still shows a landing page, but the HYPERLINK "http://www.revolutionhealth.com/preview?code=yW3qAM5zcW"preview site is wide open to all comers.

Revolution Health is not a health search engine, and is clearly different than HYPERLINK "http://www.techcrunch.com/tag/healthline"Healthline, the vertical health-related search engine that launched in late 2005, or recent health search startup HYPERLINK "http://www.medstory.com/"Medstory.

Revolution Health is a health-related portal site and social network. Users are urged to ask questions and answer other users’ questions, rate their doctors, participate in online discussions and otherwise contribute content. The site also has a number of tools to help people become more healthy, such as a calculatSor that shows how long you need to do a given activity to lose a pound of weight, and a tool for showing you how much money you’ll save if you quit smoking.

Every user has a profile page where they can link up to other users, set personal goals and aggregate content they’ve contributed to the site.

Science of Psychopathology

David Pescovitz: The cover story of Science News this week is about psychopaths, defined in the article as those pleasant individuals who "lack a conscience and are incapable of experiencing empathy, guilt, or loyalty." (On the cover, Ted Bundy.) From the article:
Articles 20061209 A7951 1947 Psychiatrist Hervey Cleckley wrote The Mask of Sanity (1941, Mosby), a classic textbook on psychopathy. Cleckley portrayed psychopaths as superficially charming, intelligent people who don't feel deep emotions and lie about almost everything because they neither understand nor care about others...

Although psychiatrists don't currently label psychopathy as a formal personality disorder, a wave of new research has yielded insights into how psychopaths think and suggested biological and temperamental roots of this condition.

These findings have not only sparked debate among researchers but also attracted widespread interest among lawyers and judges. Courts in the United States and other countries increasingly rely on psychopathy measures to make sentencing judgments. New studies suggest that being labeled a psychopath increases the likelihood that an offender will be locked up indefinitely or even executed.
